Scientific Evidence On AFFF And Cancer Risks (Apr 2025)
Summary
- AFFF is a firefighting foam that contains harmful chemicals called PFAS
- Those who have been exposed to AFFF may have an elevated cancer risk
Since the 1970s, a type of firefighting chemical called aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) has been widely used. In recent years, however, a surge of cancer cases involving people exposed to AFFF has led to an investigation into the connection between the foam and health issues. The Dangers of AFFF
One of the reasons why AFFF is so dangerous is that it contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These are long-lasting chemicals that remain in the body, especially in organs like the kidneys and liver.
One study showed that participants who were exposed to AFFF and had elevated PFAS concentration levels in their blood were up to 50% more likely to develop cancer than those who didn’t. Men who suffered from AFFF exposure symptoms were also more likely to develop prostate cancer.
Another study showed that firefighters (who have historically been the population most exposed to AFFF) with elevated PFAS levels in the blood may have a higher risk of developing a number of cancers, including:
- Prostate cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Bladder cancer
The scientific evidence on AFFF and cancer and the illnesses that people have suffered after exposure has led to a large number of lawsuits.
Legal Options After AFFF Exposure
If you were exposed to AFFF and can demonstrate that you have cancer linked to elevated levels of PFAS, you may be eligible to file an AFFF lawsuit. You will need to show how your exposure occurred, which you can do by using work records or documents that prove you lived near a location where AFFF was in use.
Your medical records will demonstrate elevated PFAS levels. You will also need to have an official diagnosis of cancer.
